Q. When my car needs service or warranty work, where do I bring it?

A. You are free to bring your car to any service center with which you are comfortable. Warranty work, however, is usually performed by a dealership. And if you have Mechanical Breakdown Protection (MBP), you are free to bring your vehicle to any licensed service center in the United States.

Q. What is Mechanical Breakdown Protection?

A. Mechanical Breakdown Protection, or MBP, is like a health insurance policy for your car. Whether your car is new or pre-owned, MBP insulates you from the financial burden of potentially expensive automotive repairs. Best of all, you can bring your vehicle to any licensed repair facility in the United States.

Q. Why do I need Mechanical Breakdown Protection?

A. Everyone knows that auto repairs can be very expensive. And when a car racks up a lifetime of road mileage, the likelihood of a repair looms even larger. MBP protects you against such expenditures and extends your car's life.

Q. Is any vehicle eligible for MBP?

A. Most, but not all, cars are eligible for MBP. In order to be eligible, your car must:

  1. Be less than 10 years old
  2. Have fewer than 90,000 miles on its odometer
  3. Be free of modifications that don't meet manufacturer specifications such as lift kits, etc.
  4. Not be a commercial of salvaged vehicle
  5. Not be a truck or van that is rated greater than one ton.

Q. When can MBP be purchased?

A. MBP can be purchased at any time, subject to eligibility requirements. But since premiums are partially based on the vehicle's age, the sooner you purchase MBP, the more affordable it will be.

Q. Will my vehicle require an inspection?

A. No. However, all vehicles with over 50,000 miles will be subject to a 30-day and 1,000 mile waiting period. Repairs incurred during this waiting period are not eligible for coverage.

Q. What about deductibles?

A. MBP coverage is available with deductibles of $0, $50, $100, and $200.

Q. Can the MBP policy be transferred if I sell my car?

A. Yes! Just make a transfer request within 30 days of selling your car and pay a basic $50 fee to the policy administrator. MBP helps increase the value of the vehicle at the time of resale.

Q. Who is the insurance company?

A. General Fidelity Insurance Company. Rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best.

Q. Can I cancel the policy?

A. Yes. The entire amount paid will be refunded if the request is made within the first 60 days from the effective date and no claims have been filed. If the cancellation is requested after the first 60 days or a claim has been filed, a partial refund is available. This amount is determined according to the pro-rata method reflecting the greater of the days in force or the miles driven based on the term of the plan selected and the policy effective date, less any claims paid, less a $25.00 administrative fee.

Q. How does the claims process work?

A. The following steps outline the basic claims process:
  1. Bring your vehicle to a licensed auto mechanic in your area.
  2. The mechanic will inspect the vehicle and prepare an estimate for the MBP claims representative.
  3. After authorized repairs are made, you pay the deductible to the repair facility and the insurance company will pay the remaining amount.
